Wishbone Girl

my father’s a boy in an old photograph
in card that says Guess Who?
I imagine he ran home and gave it to his mom
with an innocence I never knew

I saw a boy who was hopeful and kind
before his dad’s fists and a war
I saw the mischief and joy in his eyes
that his eyes never showed anymore

he’d roar like a lion
had to be king on his throne
when he forgot I was just a kid
with a face the same as his own

you go away whole and you come home in pieces
that’s what you give in a war
the shells scream in and your heart goes south
and nothin’s the same anymore

he fought and froze in a lonely foxhole
slept in a bed of cold dirt
hell does not hold half of what’s bad
and there is no word for the hurt

he’d roar like a lion
had to be king on his throne
when he forgot that the war was done
and he didn’t know how to come home

we’d each take a side of a wishbone
we’d grin and we’d pull till it’d break
he tried to win at everything
I guess it covered his ache

though he never showed me his blue, blue eyes
he left me to find on my own
in a box at the end of a delicate chain
hung a sweet little golden wishbone

he’d roar like a lion
had to be king on his throne
when he forgot I was just a kid
a sweet wishbone girl of his own

instrumental

the last time I saw my father
I was packed and traveling away
I walked through the gate and I turned one last time
and he showed me his eyes on that day

he showed his love with a sad sweet smile
with grace he let me fly
though he spoke not a word it’s love that I heard
I remember his eyes said goodbye

instrumental

his heart gave out on a hot afternoon
when I was across the sea
but a lifetime of things he’d left unsaid
he put in a letter for me:

please pluck a star, my dearest dear
I wish your dreams may come true
though I never could say it and look in your eyes
please dear, know I love you

I know I’d roar like a lion
cuz I had to be king on my throne
my heart so battered and I’m sorry I yelled
at the sweet wishbone girl of my own

please pluck a star, my dearest dear
I wish your dreams may come true
though I never could say it and look in your eyes
the wishes I made were for you

about

Kathleen Dunbar San Francisco, California

You may notice my songs are about angels and devils, birth, life, death, about creation and crumbling destruction—the troubles we humans get ourselves into and the choices we make—some of them funky, some of them ending in the dark, others rising into the light of morning. Touching, humorous, spellbinding storytelling—my songs brings you into the irony, the tragedy, and the possibilities of life. ... more
