You’re The Song
Music by Kathleen Dunbar and Joseph Feusi
Words by Kathleen Dunbar
Copyrighted by Kathleen Dunbar and Joseph Feusi
verse one
in reverie and dreams I know you
it seems that I must wait to show you
a love forever old and new
my destiny is you
the darkness and the pain
the loneliness again
won’t defeat me
I held on and I held true
I could only wait for you
to complete me
I’m the bird and you’re the song
I’m the heart where you belong
we’re the love that we receive
we’re the miracle believed
verse two
others call my name though they know
I’ll thank them and tell them they must go
the day that we were born my sweet
our hearts entwined to meet
a bird with opened wings
a crown upon a king
two together
I’m the glove that fits your hand
the waves upon your sand
forever
I’m the bird and you’re the song
I’m the heart where you belong
we’re the love that we receive
we’re the miracle believed
bridge
you spoke my name
I feel the same
I’ve been waiting here for you
instrumental
verse three
the road beneath our feet my love
is made up of the stars above us
you always knew where it would lead
your destiny is me
you’re the soft and I’m the strong
I’ve loved you all along
my sweet baby
I’m the quiet you’re the bold
in magic tales of old
knight and lady
I’m the bird and you’re the song
I’m the heart where you belong
we’re the love that we receive
we’re the miracle believed
I’m the bird and you’re the song
I’m the heart where you belong
we’re the love that we receive
we’re the miracle believed

Honey in Your Cup
By Kathleen Dunbar

Part One
I hold out my hand
hold my hand, my hand for you
oh how my love is true
though your heart be broke in two
oh the dark place
oh the dark is done
oh love
oh love
oh my love come home
oh my love is gone
love is gone, love is gone
oh how he’s gone and run
gone and run, gone and run
oh like an animal
oh like a human man
he has his heart that breaks so hard
and he has what he cannot take and
oh my love is gone
love is gone, love is gone
oh my love
I wish you would come
would come home, would come home
oh . . .
Part Two
we have a heart of ache and woe
a thing an angel cannot know
wash the pain that fills it up
taste the honey in your cup
let me give you
let me give you this
oh love
oh love
oh some tenderness
what began as cold and storm
falls in raindrops soft and warm
lightning crack is how it starts
ends in rainbow, breaks your heart
someday we’ll be cold as clay
on the day we slip away
take my hand and hear the thunder
feel the warm rain that we’re under
Instrumental
the pennies of the rain we spent
we got richer as we went
the garden thanked us this we heard
in silver song poured out by bird
oh
oh
mm-hm
oh I love you so
oh my love came home
love came home, love came home
oh oh my love
I called and you’ve come
you’ve come home, you’ve come home
oh . . .

Victory
By Kathleen Dunbar

Verse
two stars fall down in my cup
reflection comes true for when I look up
I see your bright eyes soldier so brave
heart and sword pledged for the people to save
lonely the bell whose clapper has broken
desert the soul where no love is spoke
we sing the sweet song of each other’s name
the sound of these words makes the bell ring again
Verse
your long arms make me the sweetest of rooms
that’s how we sleep now inside of those spoons
the call of drums leads you from home
salt and air and laughter, red roses and stone
a ring, a wish, a sigh of regret
innocent dreams we pledge not to forget
we cannot tell our warm tears from the rain
the sky it is crying but ours is the pain
Bridge
who holds the power to turn the key
that opens the stones, one, two and three
standing in shadow the darkness I hold
turned to the east, I bend my shadow low
Verse
small golden shells in the salt waves they ring
softest of feathers make brightest blue wings
but the horn of the moon runs aground on the stars
my love on the battlefield broken and scarred
we sigh for and why for, betrayal so stings
men asked to die for the whims of the kings
fast in their castle keep sovereigns and fools
with lives they have paid for their feasts and their jewels
Verse
we gave our honor, in blood paid and bone
our youth become ash and our joy become stone
dark be our eyes though bright be the day
drink of the bitter but don’t turn away
the universe sparkles, in velvet the stars
wisdom we ask for, may kindness be ours
illusion fall from us in sweet disarray
may love ring its bell past the last star’s decay
Instrumental
Bridge
who holds the power to turn the key
that opens the stones, one, two and three
standing in shadow the darkness I hold
turned to the east, I bend my shadow low
Verse
what is love but the patience to be
with darkness and light till the dance sets you free
hive and honey and sting of the bee
life and death circles round sweet victory
we will find joy with our arms open wide
strength undefended and nothing denied
in unending depth may the pain we befriend
the heart that is pierced shall be free in the end
the end
be free in the end
be free in the
be free in the
be free in the end, the end, the end
be free in the end
the end

When You Wish
Lyrics by Kathleen Dunbar, music by Kathleen Dunbar and Gawain Mathews
Copyrighted by Kathleen Dunbar and Gawain Mathews
you’re far away
a star away
a wish I made in the blue
my heart so
wide open
I dream of you
I wish you’d see me standing
a sweet surprise
you’d give me your hand
you’d be my king
and they would sing
all the knights and ladies
on bended knees
cuz they would see
love perfectly
I keep on searching blindly
a lonely
queen in a fantasy
when you wish then it oughta come true
what I want well I don’t even know
I only know that I’m singing to you
ohhh-oh-oh-ohh
one day with you
to stay with you
before you fly away
I miss you when
I kiss you cuz
I know that you can’t stay
deep in your pocket sky blue
sweet pieces of my heart
broken right through
when you wish then it oughta come true
what I want well I don’t even know
I only know that I’m singing to you
ohhh-oh-oh-ohh
when you wish then it oughta come true
what I want well I don’t even know
I only know that I’m singing to you
ohhh-oh-oh-ohh
a crystal tear
lonely birdsong
I feel you near
I’ve known you so long
my wish for you
look above you
in shining stars
and know I love you

Two Hand Take
By Kathleen Dunbar

gonna to swim away from you, from the muscle of your tide
you ain’t the king of gravity, you’re just the king of pride
in everything you say to me there’s something that you hide
when you sugar-honey me I know that you have lied
a man and a woman worked, the man lived by his gun
he hurt the gal and stole the mule, now the man was on the run
I did not weep the day you died with your belly full of lead
oh you never cared too much what the good book said
runnin down a long road, long road run
on the long road, longing for some
somebody got love got love some-
-body got love got love wrong
takin with a two hand, two hand take
takin too much till the giver done break
brakeman won’t stop, won’t stop this train
beggin to the brakeman to break this pain
oh a little, oh a little little bit
a little, oh a little little bit
the good lord died in pain and woe, he wore a crown of thorns
seems I’ve known that very crown from the day that I was born
you say let go, the pain let go, gal let your heart be warmed
every time I smile at you it’s the port that’s in the storm
now I got somebody good, he holds me in his arms
the length of my sweet nakedness is his sweetness and his charm
he said we bring each other joy, the jewel in life’s crown
he is the treasure of true love I searched for and I found
you don’t have to do what the devil’s own voice says
come on, you make your choices
down to the bottom to the China ground
keep on digging till the bottom get found
heart ain’t nothin but a hollow cup
feel the love got to a fill it up
up down, dig down, a little deeper
dig on down where the lovin is sweeter
oh, oh, oh, oh
a man and a woman meet, you know they kiss and a flirt
he says to her take off your dress, I say say take off your shirt
drink this cup unto the end, the sweet joy and the hurt
then lay us softly in the ground and smile upon the dirt
oh the roadhouse it is closed, now they’ve all gone home
they played there on our wedding day on the long trombones
oh play it sweetly when I’m gone in the bye and bye
I’ve made my prayers and they were heard
I’ll be happy when I die
I’ll be happy when
I’ll be happy when
I’ll be happy when I die
baby got a hole in the sole of your shoe
ground come up and it’s talkin to you
used to nothin oh nothin but stone
bonehard life when you’re livin it alone
take them shackles, make the shackles break
shackle the chain heart then the heart gonna ache
who got a heart, got a heart to give
givin from you heart then you start to live

Got love, beaucoup love, I do love.

Gonna ring the bell at the Love Hotel

We can’t deny with the flames so high
we got a big big big big fire.
Chorus
Baby I get a thrill
every time you give me squeeze.
Sugar pop, lamb chop, don’t stop, bunny hop,
you got me down on my knees!
You’re a treat, so sweet, hey hot stuff!
Got an icing top, don’t never stop.
I couldn’t want more,
baby you’re the whole candy store.
Can’t get enough of my cream puff
you’re hot hot hot hot stuff!
We’re havin fun, we’re havin fun, we’re havin big fun!
Sugar plum, honey bun, cherry pie, number one.
The look in your eyes
when I give you that big surprise!
We just begun, hit the first home run

Chorus
Baby I get a thrill
every time you give me squeeze.
Sugar pop, lamb chop, don’t stop, bunny hop,

We got a dog, we got a dog, we got a big dog.
We love him cuz he’s a fuzzy-wuzz.
He’s a cutie aww

He’s a big big big big dog.
Hooray, soirée, it’s a party!
Don’t be late, gonna celebrate.
Gonna dance and romance,
so put on your gown and your fancy pants.
Oh hot cayenne, gonna do it again
gonna party to the end!
Hooray, soirée, it’s a party!
Don’t be late, gonna celebrate.
Gonna dance and romance,

A Star Below The Moon
Lyrics by Kathleen Dunbar and Joseph Feusi
Music by Kathleen Dunbar
Copyrighted by Kathleen Dunbar and Joseph Feusi
verse
there’s a star below the moon
it’s the first one of the night
do you wish upon that star?
oh I know I wish you might
the moon shines on alone
wrapped in the velvet sky
is your wish the same as mine?
do you also sadly sigh?
I’m only famous in the mirror
that’s the clown who knows me best
all the jests and aches and lonely hours
and a love that’s unexpressed
I thought I’d hid my heart
it’s what only angels see
then across the crowded room
oh the angel came to me
musical interlude
a circus leaving town
a bad dream burned to ash
all the colors smudged and cold
all the music sad and brash
then a single note of gold
ringing through the night
the moment when you spoke my name
and you made the world right
a room is just a room my love
then you suddenly arrive
every time you look at me
it is such a sweet surprise
the circle of our arms
is not one we will undo
since you tugged the ribbon tight
and whispered keep me close to you
bridge
storm and dark is how it starts
ends in rainbow, breaks your heart
we found a pot of gold long overdue
no matter that there’s thunder dear
it’s warm rain that we’re under here
the sky is blue cuz baby I got you
verse
I’d given up on love
left the key inside the drawer
like a house alone and dark
no one lives there anymore
I thought love had passed me by
and joy was only brief
pleasure just a fleeting thing
and sadness such a thief
oh we don’t lose our youth my sweet
it’s just a place that we pass through
the moon will shine when we are old
and it will find me close to you
there’s a star below the moon
we’ll remember when we see
the wonder of the love we found
when our sweet dream came to be

For My Love

For My Love
By Kathleen Dunbar
Copyrighted by Kathleen Dunbar
*The “old poet” quoted is Robert Burns, from his poem A Red, Red Rose
“So fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry.
Till a’ the seas gang dry my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun;
I will love thee still, my dear, while the sands o’ life shall run.”
Verse
I spent many years lonely until I found you,
you were always the one although you never knew,
‘til you spoke my name and the waiting was through,
and you took my hand.
Time is a thief, he steals us away
but he also brings you and your smile every day.
Of everything given ain’t nothing will stay,
so let’s play, let’s love while we can.
Chorus
Is it dark in the end or will it be light?
Will the brightness of stars or the velvet of night
welcome our hearts when our eyes lose their sight?
Let love bring us home.
Verse
We know we’ll get old, we’ve already begun.
You can see in our faces the things we have done—
the laughing and sorrow, kindness and fun—
I’d miss none of it, my sweet love.
There’s so many things we want to do.
One day we’ll say honey, the time it sure flew.
We’re so wise and so funny and we don’t have a clue,
except about love.
Chorus
Bridge
I’ll hold your hand till the holding is done.
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
I’ll give you a kiss like we’ve just begun.
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh.
I will love you
like the *old poet says:
“While the sands of life run,
till the seas all go dry
the rocks melt with the sun
I will love you still.”
Verse
My heart only gets richer though my bones they grow old.
You fill my life with the beauty it holds.
You’re the finest my love, finer than gold.
Have I told you today that you’re grand?
The shiniest things they all go to rust.
They’ll lay us in earth and our bones go to dust.
When the end comes as we know that it must
I’ll trust you and I’ll hold your hand.

Ain’t Nobody’s Fool
By Kathleen Dunbar

verse
death in a tophat, tails and a cane
you can’t brush him off cuz he’s callin your name
best to go slow, and take yo time
review your chance to get away with the crime
card game’s better if’n your a winnin
your gums are better when your teeth are in ‘em
better to be toothless than caught by the law
you can cut your meat small, mash it wit’ your jaw
verse
you know you’re pretty wicked with it
you know you’re stubborn and you’re stickin with it
you don’t want to die but you ain’t kickin it
the bomb is in the clock with the tickin in it
you got silver spurs, you like to gallop
when they give you hell then you give them a wallop
pull down your hat, pull up your britches
get your shovel in the vein and your eye on the riches
chorus
sailor, sailor go down
it’s the gold in the hold
that’s pullin you down
she gonna break up
but you go break down
they’ll find you with the body
when the sirens sound
they’ll find you with the body
when the sirens sound
verse
baby is an angel, she kiss like she prays
the pain that she brings also takes the pain away
her voice in your ear—you’re never more alone
her knife gets sharper the more it’s honed
where does she come from, where does she go
she can’t really tell you cuz she doesn’t really know
she looks real fine, she travels real well
but you can’t check out of that particular hotel
verse
the trap got sprung, you stepped in
you couldn’t see how this would end
you keep holdin on ‘til you can’t no more
your hands are blistered and your back is sore
hey little miss, you call her honey
the answer to your dreams but something feels funny
when she gets hungry she pulls out her gun says
you got to be dead to get your picture on the money
chorus
verse
stoobottom diligent, rathbone drunk
I’m as full of stories as a smell is full of skunk
stand at the crossroads stampin your foot
and I appear all covered in soot
you tell your children, mend your ways
else damnation’s how you’ll end your days
what do you want boy, careful what I’m givin
when you die you goin pay for what you doin when you’re living
verse
the buzzards make money runnin them guns
they got the power, the women and the fun
war is better longer than if it is won
no! don’t stop the profit train once it is begun
Dow Jones crashed, ring rang rung
shoulda had a picnic while the banker hung
no final snap of his neck was heard
he got his dividend, he ain’t no gallows bird
chorus
outro
mm-hm
heehaw mule
stompin and a’whompin
and a’keepin his cool
whoo whoo
ain’t nobody’s fool
ain’t nobody’s fool—Oh No!
ain’t nobody’s fool

ain’t nobody’s
aw-haw

Wishbone Girl
By Kathleen Dunbar
Copyrighted by Kathleen Dunbar
my father’s a boy in an old photograph
in card that says Guess Who?
I imagine he ran home and gave it to his mom
with an innocence I never knew
I saw a boy who was hopeful and kind
before his dad’s fists and a war
I saw the mischief and joy in his eyes
that his eyes never showed anymore
he’d roar like a lion
had to be king on his throne
when he forgot I was just a kid
with a face the same as his own
you go away whole and you come home in pieces
that’s what you give in a war
the shells scream in and your heart goes south
and nothin’s the same anymore
he fought and froze in a lonely foxhole
slept in a bed of cold dirt
hell does not hold half of what’s bad
and there is no word for the hurt
he’d roar like a lion
had to be king on his throne
when he forgot that the war was done
and he didn’t know how to come home
we’d each take a side of a wishbone
we’d grin and we’d pull till it’d break
he tried to win at everything
I guess it covered his ache
though he never showed me his blue, blue eyes
he left me to find on my own
in a box at the end of a delicate chain
hung a sweet little golden wishbone
he’d roar like a lion
had to be king on his throne
when he forgot I was just a kid
a sweet wishbone girl of his own
instrumental
the last time I saw my father
I was packed and traveling away
I walked through the gate and I turned one last time
and he showed me his eyes on that day
he showed his love with a sad sweet smile
with grace he let me fly
though he spoke not a word it’s love that I heard
I remember his eyes said goodbye
instrumental
his heart gave out on a hot afternoon
when I was across the sea
but a lifetime of things he’d left unsaid
he put in a letter for me:
please pluck a star, my dearest dear
I wish your dreams may come true
though I never could say it and look in your eyes
please dear, know I love you
I know I’d roar like a lion
cuz I had to be king on my throne
my heart so battered and I’m sorry I yelled
at the sweet wishbone girl of my own
please pluck a star, my dearest dear
I wish your dreams may come true
though I never could say it and look in your eyes
the wishes I made were for you

My Dreams Are Calling Me

verse
I wake, I work
take a coffee break
it’s not me here
I am not ordinary
though you cannot see
chorus
I’ll set sail for the other shore
I’ll be free cuz I believe in dreams
that’s what our dreams are for
instrumental
verse
another day is done
I’m out the door
night is falling
it’s me I’m looking for
my dreams are calling me
chorus
I’ll set sail for the other shore
I’ll be free cuz I believe in dreams
that’s what our dreams are for
bridge
heartache and pain it seems when
each day’s the same
I hide my dreams
so they won’t die
but when I keep them lonely
I only let them slip away from me
instrumental
verse
one day I’ll walk away
I’ll pack my bags
I’ll make the leap to be
uniquely me
to be extraordinary
chorus
I’ll set sail for the other shore
I’ll be free cuz I believe in dreams
that’s what our dreams are for
I’ll set sail for the other shore
I’ll be free cuz I believe in dreams
that’s what our dreams are for
I’ll set sail for the other shore
I believe, I’ll be free
that’s what my dreams are for

I’m Coming Home
By Kathleen Dunbar

verse
a lovelorn spoon
a shoe, a moon
a little scrap
of a sad sweet tune
some folks stay
some go away
what’s left of me is a ruin my love
all that’s left is a ruin
the dark angel swigged
from the bottle he poured
swore in a rage
at the image he bore
with his hands and a yell
pushed the hot gates of hell
we followed him through and we fell, we fell
god could not help us we fell
shells come in
with a blue engine moan
whining defining
all you have known
the ground measured again
in boots not in men
blood fills the holes that are blown
in the chalice cups of their bones
chorus
stay in the slow lane
in case you get stalled
the engine’s on fire
and the tires are all bald
you say baby I’m comin home
it might take a while
I’m comin home for your smile, my love
I’ve got to get back to your smile
verse
in a one-horse town
a mote in god’s eye
you ain’t on the lam, boy
but you are on the fly
you stand there and curse
and ask which is worse
to live with the ache or to die
sick unto death with the why
there is a boy
you know he’s your son
he has the same face
you had when you were when young
born into grace
all the while you laid waste
in a foreign place killed with your gun
in a war that could not be won
you cannot refuse
what you finally lose
love unaccepted
endured but unused
what she lays in your hand
slips away like the sand
the promised and pointless confused
in the sad blue despair of a bruise
chorus
stay in the slow lane
in case you get stalled
the engine’s on fire
and the tires are all bald
you say baby I’m comin home
it might take a while
I’m comin home for your smile, my love
I’ve got to get back to your smile
verse
it’s warm in the kitchen
what kitchens are for
you walk where you used to
along the boards of the floor
there’s love here and laughter
but caught in the after
you cannot go back to before
innocence yours nevermore
the singer has emptied
her heart to the crowd
what you have kept secret
it’s all said out loud
from an inner room lonely
what you have known only
your sacrifice you must avow
at this tragedy’s end take your bow
her dress was low cut
her hair was a mess
but this of her high holy gifts
was the best:
she longed to receive you
not once to deceive you
no need your sins to confess
just be held in her tenderness
chorus
stay in the slow lane
in case you get stalled
the engine’s on fire
and the tires are all bald
you say baby I’m comin home
it might take a while
I’m comin home for your smile, my love
I’ve got to get back to your smile
I’m comin home for your smile, my love
I’ve got to get back to your smile
mm mm mm mm mm mm mm
I fought through this hell for your smile
can you help me get back to your smile, my love
mm mm mm mm mm
mm mm mm mm mm mm mm
I want to get back to your smile

I Want To Tell You
By Kathleen Dunbar
Copyrighted by Kathleen Dunbar
I want to tell you
that you are okay
I want to be
the flower for you
the small diamond water
of the fountain
with the mossy stones
the clear song of the bird
that breaks your heart
enough
so that you begin
to remember
it's okay to be alive
I know how hard it is
I have the scars, too
from the jagged monster
who chews its children
and leaves them
tense-boned
and half-alive
the monster of breaking
who fills small bodies
with knowledge so unspeakable
that the most golden of bells
can make no sound
but my love
if you keep hope
behind the wall
it is no good
no good
you have to walk out
into the open now
though every sinew
curdles
for bone and will
have done their work
they have brought you
here
but they are
useless creatures
when confronted
with kindness
what was given to you
long ago—
the sad old spasm
of protection—
with that
you can never know honey
you can never truly
deeply
laugh
oh my love, those old wars
they are over and gone
instead
my warm hand is here
and I'll tell you
over and over
with the eloquent language
of my fingers
my breath
my eyes that have seen
death and lived
I will tell you gladly
that we are home at last
alive most deeply
in our own dignity
though the hired warrior
has kept you walking
let him lay down
in the garden's earth now
and sumptuously rot
kindly let him come apart in
worm and root
till his hollowness
has healed into
the soft den of an animal
you have always been
the untarnishable gold bell
and the crazy wild heart
of its star-made clapper
and it is time, my love
for you to
ring

Kathleen Dunbar San Francisco, California
You may notice my songs are about angels and devils, birth, life, death, about creation and crumbling destruction—the troubles we humans get ourselves into and the choices we make—some of them funky, some of them ending in the dark, others rising into the light of morning. Touching, humorous, spellbinding storytelling—my songs brings you into the irony, the tragedy, and the possibilities of life. ... more
